NIH data sharing and discovery in Figshare

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) new Data Management and Sharing Policy went into effect in January 2023 and strongly encourages researchers to deposit research data in established repositories such as Figshare where other researchers can find and reuse the data.

In this webinar, we presented how Figshare meets the NIH’s ‘Desirable Characteristics for Data Repositories’ and how we are working collaboratively as part of the NIH Generalist Repository Ecosystem Initiative (GREI) to enhance support for NIH data sharing.

We highlighted practical steps for sharing NIH data in Figshare including; what types of data and other research outputs to share in Figshare, how to incorporate data sharing in Figshare into NIH data management and sharing plan, and best practices for documenting data in Figshare so that it is FAIR and discoverable. We also showcased newly released Figshare product features including a new edit item page and enhanced metadata fields, folder upload, and faceted search for funders and organizations.
